An apprentice designer in a muslin factory, he took advantage of his free time to take drawing lessons at the Latour school. Shortly after winning a prize of 300 francs in the departmental competition, he came to Paris, where he worked as a draftsman for a curtain manufacturer; at the same time he attended the courses of Picot and Pils at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. A trip he made in 1874 to Villerville decided his future, the sea inspired him, he became the painter of fishermen and sailors. First salon in 1870. He engraved a few etchings, several of which were published in Cadart's Illustration Nouvelle. He died in Paris, six months after his wife, leaving two young orphans for whose benefit a sale was organized, with the help of many artists.
