Biography
Herman Corrodi (1844-1905) was a Swiss-Italian painter and one of the most celebrated 19th-century Orientalist and romantic landscape artists. Renowned for his sun-drenched Mediterranean views, vibrant religious processions and poetic Roman Campagna scenes, he was an official painter to the British royal family and many European courts.
Early Life & Training
Born on 30 March 1844 in Frascati near Rome (not Zurich, as some sources claim), Herman was the son of Swiss watercolourist Salomon Corrodi (1810-1892), who settled in Rome in the 1830s. Trained first at the Accademia di San Luca under his father, he later studied in Geneva with Alexandre Calame and in Paris (1872), where he fell under the spell of the French school and adopted a brighter, more luminous style.
Travels & Orientalist Inspiration
An intrepid traveller, Corrodi visited Egypt, Syria, Cyprus, Turkey and the Middle East between 1870 and 1890. These journeys inspired his most iconic works: twilight caravans before the pyramids, glowing views of the Bosphorus, religious processions in Cairo or Jerusalem, and sunlit Constantinople scenes.
Career & Royal Patronage
Frequenting European courts, he received direct commissions from Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and numerous royal families. In 1893 he was knighted Accademico di Merito by the Accademia di San Luca, where he also taught. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy in London, Rome and Munich, enjoying tremendous commercial success during his lifetime.
Style & Favourite Subjects
Starting as an academic landscapist, Corrodi evolved into a luminous romantic Orientalist: golden evening light, shimmering water reflections, colourful moving crowds. His finest canvases capture the magical moment of sunset over the Nile, prayer time in Jerusalem or fishermen on the Bosphorus.
Current Market (2025)
In 2025, Herman Corrodi remains one of the most sought-after 19th-century Orientalist painters: major Egyptian or Constantinople views regularly exceed €80,000–€250,000 at auction (records nearing €400,000 at Sotheby’s and Christie’s). His works are held in the British Royal Collection, the Vatican and many European museums.
